Dahi Katla Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams Katla fish (cut into pieces)
  • 1 cup plain yogurt (dahi)
  • 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  • 2-3 green chilies (slit)
  • 1 teaspoon ginger paste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons mustard oil
  • Fresh coriander leaves (for garnishing)

Instructions:

  1. Marinate the Fish:
    • Wash the Katla fish pieces thoroughly.
    • In a bowl, mix yogurt, ginger paste, garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin powder, and salt.
    • Add the fish pieces to the marinade and coat them well. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Sauté the Onions:
    • Heat mustard oil in a pan.
    • Add the finely chopped onions and green chilies.
    • Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  3. Add the Marinated Fish:
    • Add the marinated fish pieces to the pan.
    • Cook on medium heat for about 5 minutes, turning the fish gently to ensure even cooking.
  4. Simmer with Yogurt:
    • Reduce the heat to low.
    • Add the remaining marinade from the bowl to the pan.
    • Mix well and let it simmer for another 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  5. Adjust Seasoning:
    • Taste and adjust salt and spices as needed.
    • If the gravy is too thick, add a little water.
  6. Garnish and Serve:
    • Once the fish is cooked and the gravy thickens, turn off the heat.
    • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
    • Serve hot with steamed rice or paratha.

Estimated Cooking Times:

  • Marinating time: 30 minutes
  • Sautéing onions: 5 minutes
  • Cooking fish: 5 minutes
  • Simmering with yogurt: 10 minutes
